What worked, and what did you have to re-learn?

My parents taught me mostly everything I know about money, although when I started off on my own I had to relearn some basic concepts.  Luckily, my parents were very good about making me pay off my credit cards in full each month so I don’t have any credit card debt.

One thing my parents taught me that I had to relearn was to balance a checkbook.  To me, the idea is a little outdated with online banking.  I now pay for EVERYTHING with my credit card, even if it’s a buck or two.  I never write paper checks anymore and use my bank’s ability to send electronic checks.  This way I can easily track all of my spending.  Granted there will always be some cash purchases but through my method I’ve found I spend over $40 a month on my daily coffee.
